Dog Rodeo

Bought Axel a harness last weekend after the vet told me that pug's neck is too short for a collar. I have been letting him wear it for a while everyday although we are in the apartment, so that he can get used to it.

So far he has no problem with it... that is until I used it as a saddle for Little Teddy.

A bagful of skin problems

I brought Axel to the vet last Saturday to get this fungal growth on his right cheek checked. We were attended to after waiting for about 20 minutes by this young vet whom I think is probably fresh from school as I have an impression she didn't know what she was doing. She then called in a more experienced (and louder) lady vet to take a look at Axel.

The first thing this vet said upon seeing Axel was "Ahhhh...a pug, a bagful of skin problems". She appeared very knowledgeable about dogs and I appreciated her lengthy explanation on pugs and their skin problems. She checked Axel and said that Axel actually has good skin as compared to most pugs. However he did have minor fungal growth in his ears, his cheek and paws.

She told us that pugs are very prone to skin diseases.. and there are many reasons how these skin problems come about. Some could be from external factor, some from allergies and some from "internal system attack" within a pug's body. The 3rd reason I mentioned would be the most serious one as they will need to administer steroids if that happens.

Anyhow we will need to find out the reason, by eliminating the possibilities one by one... from the least serious ones to the more serious ones. She took some sample from Axel's fungal patch and ran some tests and couldn't find anything. So now, we need to monitor to see whether it's because of food allergies. I told her Axel is on lamb & rice diet now. She then explained to me that in terms of food, the following are the order from which dog's are most sensitive to, to the least sensitive:

Chicken->Lamb->Fish->Extended Chicken->Vegetarian

The "Extended Chicken" is a processed chicken meat which the body does not recognise as chicken. Canggih leh.... and it is really expensive!! It cost about RM120 for 3kg pack!!!!

Anyway she said it's okay to maintain Axel on lamb and rice for the moment, but have to stop all food with wheat and beef. This means no usual dog biscuits, dog chews etc that are made from such ingredients. I bought Axel some baby carrots as treats after that.

I also asked her about Axel's constant tearing in his eyes. She said it's normal as pug's fold sometimes irritates the eye. The way to solve that is to get the fold removed. We immediately said No! and I added "well...maybe we will buy him goggles".

The vet prescribed some antiseptic wash and cream for the fungal growth and some oily stuff (dunno what's that!) to take. I also bought Malaseb which is the medicated shampoo for dogs and cats.

Total=RM101. Much more expensive than any of my own visits to the doctors! Not cheap to maintain a dog, eh?

Leg Massage

Nothing beats a good "leg massage", don't you agree?

A little dance

This is Axel's little "dance" before meal. Actually he spins himself like that so that he can move forward and at the same time, monitor that I am following him.

Previously for many times, bad daddy ran and hide when Axel rushed to the kitchen to wait for his food. So Axel thought of a plan to ensure that bad daddy is following him, hence the little "dance".

Good workout

It has been a while since I wrote about Axel, my pug. Since it's not prudent for me to write about the "fire" at work which is bothering me a lot, I will write about my little boy.

Axel is well and has lost some weight (I think), thanks to Gan's family who always make sure he gets all the necessary workout everytime I send him there. Also I have been playing chase with him at home, with me running from the living hall to my room and him chasing me. I would then jumped onto my bed and he would circle around the bed finding opportunity to pounce on me (if he is tall enough, he would have... but he's not).

Then I would run to the dining hall and let him chase me around the dining table. I do worry sometimes that I would slip while running and knock my head on something. After all, I am no longer 18-22 ("sap pat yah yee"). So if you don't hear from me for a long while, do come to my apartment and collect my body.

Anyhow, it's a good cardio workout for me too, as after the game.. my heart would be beating very fast and I would be panting like crazy. Axel gets the same result too. This workout tires him out and he would go to his little mattress and try to get some sleep... if I would let him..

The most powerful expression

Do you know what's the most powerful expression in Axel's dictionary?

"Mumm Mumm"

"Mumm Mumm" to Axel means "the whole wide world".... and to us humans, they mean "food".

This expression is even more powerful when used with a high pitched voice.

Lap Dog

According to Wikipedia,

"A lap dog is a dog that is small enough to be held in the arms or lie comfortably on a person's lap. Most lap dogs fall into the toy dog category. A lapdog is not a specific breed, but is a generic term for dogs of a small size and friendly disposition. Lapdogs were bred primarily as pets rather than for functionality."

Screen Cleaner

I got this from a forwarded e-mail and it is just too cute NOT to be included into my blog. I actually sat in front of my laptop watching this for a while, hehehe.

It's so typical of pugs. Lick lick lick lick lick... neverending licking, gosh! At home, I have a 3 in 1 - screen cleaner, floor cleaner and face cleaner.

Anyway, I showed this to Axel and he was curious at the beginning. He went behind my laptop to see whether there really was another pug there. When he found there wasn't, he lost interest. He went back to his usual floor licking.

Enjoy:

PAWS Malaysia

Paws Animal Welfare Shelter (PAWS) is a society that was set up to help abandoned, abused and unwanted animals. It is an entirely voluntary society which is not supported by any government grant or subsidy. It operates through the goodwill of its members and direct contribution from the public.
~ taken from PAWS Malaysia's website

Today, I went there to renew my membership and to do some donations. It has been a while since the last time I was there.

PAWS Malaysia is located along the road leading to Subang old airport. The buildings there are quite old, but still functional. They accommodate mostly dogs and cats; but I did see a monkey and a few rabbits as well.

There are quite a number of rescued dogs and cats there. Made me feel a bit sad on how can people just abandoned these animals. Thank goodness there are societies such as PAWS that take them in and help to rehome them.

The dogs and cats have their separate enclosures. Some are kept in cages. They looked very well taken care of... thanks to the workers, volunteers and donors. As mentioned above, this place operates solely on the goodwill of the public... so without the kindness of these people, it would not have been possible.

See below for some of the pictures that I have taken there:

You can help out by adopting some of these animals, or do some donation to help them in maintaining the place. Do check out their website to find out how you can do so.

Sleepy Head

This week is training week for us. Our boss from Paris came here to introduce us a product which we will be helping in R&D.

I have always dread trainings, not because of how they are conducted... but rather because I am afraid I will be "fishing" in them. It's often embarrassing as it's not something that you can control and your eyes (also your conscience) just shut themselves down. So your head would be swaying left and right, up and down. Even worse when your dozing off was acknowledged publicly by the trainer!

I remember when I did my part time studies last time where classes were held from 6pm - 9pm. So after work, I would rush to my lectures only to end up sleeping through half the sessions. Come to think of it, there was never once which I was fully aware throughout the class. I have developed this pattern, you see...

However for today's training, miracle happened. I did not doze off even a tiny bit. You know what I did? When I felt like dozing off, I quickly scanned around the room to see those people who had fallen asleep. Looking at them tickled my funny bones and after a suppressed laugh, I was all awake again! If you have the same problem as me, try this method sometimes!

Well, another 4 days of training to go... see how long I can sustain...

Here's leaving you with a video of Axel, another sleepy head...

I bought a car

I bought a car and it's an impulse buy. Stylish or not? It even has this "Style" logo leh.

Haha, yeah you got me! My new car came in a box and it has a remote.

Come to think of it, this is my first ever remote control toy car. Such deprived childhood I had, right?

Well anyhow, this little thing kept me occupied for half a day. I never knew remote control cars can be sooooo fun. Oh...and it became the tool to bully Axel (my pug) too! See what I mean..

Run Axel Run

A video of Axel running away with his bear bear. We often play this game for exercise... I would pretend to chase him, and he would pretend that I am the bad monster wanting to take away his bear bear.
